What if our last act could be a gift to the planet? Musician and psychiatrist Clark Wang prepares for his own green burial in this immersive documentary. While battling lymphoma, Clark has discovered a burgeoning movement that uses burial to conserve and restore natural areas, forgoing typical funeral practices that stress the ecosystem. Boldly facing his mortality, Clark and his partner Jane have become passionate about green burial, compelled by both the environmental benefits and the idea that one can remain within the cycle of life, rather than being cut off from it. The spirited pair have inspired a compassionate local cemeterian, and together they aim to use green burial to save a North Carolina woods from being clear-cut. “Moving and inspiring! The film is about a life of purpose and a death with meaning.”—Nell Minow, The Huffington Post “ * * * *! A beautiful rumination on life, death and burial choice.”—Dan Schindel, Nonfics “Big-hearted and thought-provoking.”—Chris Barsanti, Film Journal International Directed by Amy Browne, Jeremy Kaplan, Tony Hale & Brian Wilson

There's a Man in the Woods

When I was in elementary school, the older kids started a rumor that quickly made recess a terrifying experience. I've been wanting to make this film just so I had a place to put some of the details of that rumor. I animated this in flash, and did my backgrounds in photoshop. After Effects for compositing, and Protools for sound. Thanks to Michael Paul Kennedy for the wonderful music ( ), and Michael Ho for the voice work ( ). Watch other films made by my classmates:

The Wood Turner

Shot in a couple of hours on 2 separate afternoons, this is Leo who lives in a yurt with his partner and a variety of animals on the edge of Exmoor in the UK. He is a craftsman of many talents, and this film shows him turning a piece of wood into a beautiful bowl using a traditional foot powered lathe (which he also built himself). We started shooting on the first afternoon, but one of his sheep escaped, so we had to shoot the rest the following afternoon. Unfortunately, the weather was far from perfect and was actually raining lightly. It doesn't take him long to turn one of these bowls, and watching him work was a real pleasure. Music - Conversations with Angels - Luke Richards Inner Dream - Barrie Gledden. All shot using Canon 7D with EF 24 -105, f4 lens.

In September 2012 we have been commissioned by artistic director Heather Eddington of State of Flux DanceFilm Company for their Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Awards 2013 finalist performance A Study of Who, organised in collaboration with Create and the Barbican. A Study of Who is a collaboration between State of Flux and the poet Anna Mae Selby depicting the five stages of grief in a scenography inherently designed and implemented by Nocte. By using different lighting setups and dispositions for each consecutively revealed element, every scene of the choreography is accentuated in its various settings. The installation, comprising 30 unique handmade redwood anglepoise lamps with classic tungsten lightbulbs, is eventually emerging from the ground building a structured landscape of responsiveness and light, taking the spectator through the emotional and physical journey of the performer’s flowing display of grief. The degree of the hanging light bulbs and the crossed placing of the lamps in a curved position, directing the visual impression of the scenery, create an interplay between light and shade. The sequenced installation building the setting and following the motion of the story is providing a consistent spatial response for the viewer. The music for this one came from an improvisation I did live, using 4 streams of infinite delay in Logic. The footage was shot using a point and shoot around my neighborhood in Woodstock, both on my feet and my bicycle. Like my other circular videos, it was made to be exhibited on my interactive site where it can be turned by clicking the panels.

Shot in -30 degree weather using only natural light and no digital trickery, The Woods is a horror-meets-arthouse narrative about the lengths we will go to take care of family.
