The Tate video content rebrand

The idea behind this project was to increase awareness of Tate as a broadcaster of arts programmes. All filmed in- camera, we achieved this by digitally creating a number animated logos then filming the result on a large LED screen. All the animations were filmed in the Turbine hall at Tate Modern with a 7D and 5D. By using numerous lenses, this gave us an abstract and unpredictable result which seemed to fit with the nature of their content.

Tate Modern - Watch This Space

Working as part of the ManvsMachine team I helped to create this Teaser for the relaunch of Tate Moderns Turbine Hall. It was my job to create some of the CG shots within the piece. Cinema 4D and Arnold was used to build, light and texture the environments. Realflow was also used to create the fluid simulations in two of the shots. This awesome timeline is a work from Sara Fanelli http://www.sarafanelli.com/ and you can actually buy it on paper at the Tate I scanned it and put it together as a presentation for my project about the Tate Gallery: https://vimeo.com/70270692. I actually intended to delete it afterwards, but everybody seems to love it! Good work, Sara.

Tate background process

While working on this background design for the Tate Movie Project, I happened to save it out at various stages of completion. I thought it might make a nice process video so here it is, from scruffy pencil sketch to full vector glory. And back again. For anyone interested it was drawn straight in to Flash, with a texture layer created in Photoshop.

Kent Tate - Air & Earth

Preview - Moving Images & Music: Kent Tate. The original soundtrack is of remixed satellite recordings of the Earth's magnetosphere, and is shown with the original soundtrack as part of my touring exhibition "Movies for a Pulsing Earth." There are certain places that sustain me. Places where the elements of nature are so evocatively displayed, that my desire to return and experience them again never loses its hold. Filmed on location: Island of Hawaii: Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, The Saddle, Kilauea Volcano, Halemaumua Crater, Kilauea Iki The Big Island is 20 degrees latitude north of the equator giving it a climate with a narrow range of temperatures along with continuous prevailing winds. Above 30 degrees latitude north and 30 degrees latitude south of the equator cold air from the Arctic and cold air from Antarctica mingles vigorously with hot air from the tropics. It is largely this interaction of cold air from the poles with hot air from the tropics along with the oceans circulating currents that drives most weather as we experience it today. Peter Douglas Ward, a paleontologist and professor of Biology and Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington, Seattle wrote the groundbreaking book "Under a Green Sky" in 2007. In this seminal work he asserts that as carbon dioxide levels continue to escalate we may have a planet that is so warm that eventually the ice caps will melt causing the planet’s air circulation systems to slow to a crawl. This he claims will create a largely calm windless world where the blue sky we see today will become a pale dull green.

JOAN MiRÓ @ TATE MODERN

The film explores Joan Miró's life and working practice, beginning at his family's farm in Montroig, Catalonia, a sanctuary for him throughout his life and the source of much of his artistic inspiration. Guided by Miró's grandson and the curators from Tate Modern, the film visits his complex of studios and workshops overlooking the sea near Palma, Mallorca, where he moved after the Second World War and where he worked prolifically until his death at the age of 93. It includes rare material from films by Pere Portabella and Català Roca of Miró at work, and testimonials from friends who remember him as a remarkably generous and humble man. The film was made to accompany the exhibition 'Joan Miró, The Ladder of Escape' at Tate Modern. 14 April - 11 September See http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/joanmiro/default.shtm Music by Emu Masuyama Directed, Filmed and Edited by Martin Hampton Executive Produced by Jane Burton and Kate Vogel @ Tate Media

Kent Tate - Fire & Water

Preview: Moving Images & Music: Kent Tate. For almost a decade I lived near the village of Volcano, Hawaii in a native Ohia rainforest. My house was about 10 kilometers from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park so I would go there whenever I could. Here was a place that displayed the essential forces of earth, air, fire and water. The basic elements that make our very appearance possible. This had quite a profound impact on me, witnessing firsthand how elegant and symbiotic everything actually works so to speak. Occasionally I would even see new land suddenly appear which only moments before didn’t exist. One of the things that amazed me about this area is that after only a couple of years because of birds, wind, the warm weather and the abundant moisture Hapuu ferns (a pioneering species) would take hold in the crevices of the surface flow lava (in particular Pahoehoe) beginning a whole new cycle of interacting plants and animals. Kilauea Volcano, on the island of Hawaii rests on the eastern flank of Mauna Loa, the largest shield volcano on Earth. The Pu'u 'Ō'ō vent on Kilauea began it’s eruption phase in 1982 and continues to this day, making it one of the planet’s most active volcanoes.

Kent Tate - Focal Point

Preview: Moving Images & Music: Kent Tate. We live in a holographic world. It is a busy, busy place with much to do, with not enough time to do it. We also live in a world where a host of entities are vying for our attention. With so much competition to retain our gaze a clutter threshold is a very real hazard. I have always been sensitive to movement. There is either too much movement or too little movement, so I try to seek a balance, or at least make efforts to set aside moments where I can calm my overstimulated nervous system. I am partial to the pace of the urban, but it is the stillness of remote places where I tend to feel the most focused. Focal point (noun); the point at which rays or waves meet after reflection or refraction, or the point from which diverging rays or waves appear to proceed. Distributed by the Winnipeg Film Group. Kent Tate - Isolated Gestures

Preview: Moving Images & Music: Kent Tate. The story for me is in how light contrasts the absence of light in shaping forms within a given frame of time and space. I generally gravitate towards places that reveal the many layers of time, stimulating reflections on all the different life forms that may have existed in a particular location where I've set up my camera and tripod. This is when I imagine worlds that have passed, worlds that are present, and worlds that are yet to be. Isolated Gestures: Part 1- Calming is the lack of clutter, Part 2- Seeking light suspended, Part 3- Transmissions on a thin line, Part 4 - Thirst, Part 5 - Super Cell Part 6 - Hunger, Part 7- Vessel in rapture, Part 8 - Hiding in plain view, Part 9 - Invisible tension. "The very scale, the hugeness of simple forms, emphasizes stability. It is not hills and mountains which should call eternal. Nature abhors an elevation as much as it abhors a vacuum; a hill is no sooner elevated than the forces of erosion begin tearing it down. These prairies are quiescent, close to static; looked at for any length of time, they begin to impose their awful perfection on the observer’s mind. Eternity is a peneplain.” – Wallace Stegner, Wolf Willow. Winner of Ruth Shaw award (best of Saskatchewan) & nominated for the Golden Sheaf award (experimental film category) in the 2015 Yorkton Film Festival. Filmed on location in southwest Saskatchewan, Canada. Funded in part by the Saskatchewan Arts Board. Distributed by the Winnipeg Film Group.
